The Prohibition era lives on at Apotheke (9 Doyers Street; 212-406-0400), a dark and cozy bar in a pocket of Chinatown you never knew existed. According to legend, the address once held an opium den and a gang hideout. This trend will only continue to skyrocket as the 75th anniversary of the 21st Amendment comes couple with the great depression mentality setting into Manhattan.

Bar Buzzword: Prohibition
Seems most of the exclusive, little, dank bars are in the mood as casting themselves as prohibition era bars for the same reason I would -- it was the golden era of the cocktail. Or at least that is how we romanticize it. The latest to get the prohibition label by the NYT:
Labels:
cocktails,
depression,
gin,
manhattan,
prohibition
